Unwinding with a DIY Spa Night: How I Make Time for Self Care as a Busy Mom

Updated: Oct 7, 2025

As a busy mom, finding time for myself often feels like a luxury I can't afford, especially with our economy the way it is right now. Am I right? Between juggling work, household responsibilities, kids sports, and the endless demands of motherhood, putting myself first tends to slip down my list of priorities. All the way to the very bottom if I'm being honest. However, I've learned the hard way that neglecting self care only leads to burnout and exhaustion. HELLO to my extra 10 pounds of fat that won't go away.

That's why I've made a conscious effort to carve out moments of relaxation, even in the midst of chaos. One of my favorite ways to unwind and recharge is by hosting a DIY spa night right at home. I suggest installing a lock on the bathroom door to keep the kids (and spouse) away for a bit. HAH!

The Setting

Setting the scene for my spa night is crucial in creating a tranquil atmosphere. I dim the lights, light some scented candles (lavender is my favorite!), and play soft music in the background. The ambiance instantly shifts, signaling to my mind and body that it's time to relax.

Skincare Ritual

My skincare routine doubles as a therapeutic ritual during my DIY spa night. I start by cleansing my face, followed by a soothing face mask to pamper my skin. While the mask works its magic, I indulge in a warm foot soak with Epsom salts, a blissful treat for my tired teacher/mom feet. Don't worry if you don't own a soaking tub for your feet. I bought a cheap dish tub from Walmart that works great and is super inexpensive! Throw on a fresh coat of polish to your toenails after they soak for an added bonus!

Relaxing Bath

One of the highlights of my spa night is soaking in a warm bath infused with essential oils and bath salts. I This simple act of self care washes away the stress of the day, allowing me to unwind both mentally and physically. I even add a few drops of lavender oil to ensure restful night's sleep.

Mindful Moment

After my bath I slip into my softest pajamas and take a few moments to practice mindfulness. I close my eyes, focus on my breath, do some light stretching, and let go of any lingering tension. Then, I will take out my bible and spend as much time as I need with the Lord.

So, to all the busy moms out there, remember that self care is not selfish, it's a necessary act of kindness towards yourself. Treat yourself to a spa night every once in a while, because you deserve it! Wine optional.

Go ahead, run that bath, light those candles, and let the calming waters of self care wash over you. Remember, you are worthy of the love and care you give so freely to others.

P.S. You're amazing mama!
